But, if you still find your hair oily, try reducing the frequency. This is because with each wash your scalp will become dry, and your glands work doubly hard to produce more oil. It is definitely worth a try


If you are dealing with oily hair, it is important that you condition only the tip of your hair. This will help you to prevent greasiness on the scalp. Make sure to thoroughly rinse off the conditioner.


Allow your hair to dry naturally. This is because the use of blow dryers and other styling products can actually increase the production of oil in the scalp. By, allowing your hair to dry naturally you can get a balance in the sebum production.

Home Remedies for Oily Scalp

1.Multani Mitti

Mutani Mitti – 2 tbs

Water – as required to make a fine paste


  • Mix Multani Mitti with water to make a fine paste.
  • Apply this as a hair mask.
  • White for a while and rinse it off thoroughly


Neem helps in dealing with the problems associated with an oily scalp. It reduces dandruff and itchy scalp. Neem is also known to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth.


Neem Powder -2 tbs

Water – as required


  • Mix neem powder and water to form a paste.
  • Use this as a shampoo to cleanse your hair.
  • Rinse off thoroughly.


Shikaki is a natural cleanser and it is commonly used to wash hair. It has amazing benefits for the hair including that reducing excess oil. You can use a shikakai mask once a week to remove excess oil from your scalp


Shikakai – 2 tbs

Yoghurt – as required


  • Mix the shikakai with yoghurt to form a thick paste.
  • Apply this as a hair mask once a week and see a healthy shine in your hair and reduced oil on the scal

4.Aloe vera

Aloe vera can help soothe the scalp, reduce oiliness and improve the texture of hair.


Aloe vera – 1 tbs

Lemon juice – 2tbs

Shampoo – 1 cup


  • Mix the aloe vera and lemon juice in your shampoo.
  • Use this to cleanse your hair regularly

5.Black tea

Black tea is rich in antioxidants and caffeine. This is helpful for hair growth. It also helps to give a natural shine to the hair, reduce oiliness and dandruff in the hair


Black tea – 2 tbs

Water – 2 cups


  • Boil the black tea in water for 5 minutes.
  • Use this water as a rinse. Let it soak for twenty minutes.
  • Now rinse your hair with normal water.
